Earth Day Oregon

On April 22, 2022, the world will celebrate Earth Day.

Forest Park Conservancy is partnering with businesses across the state to champion Earth Day and the importance of protecting and restoring Forest Park.

What is Earth Day Oregon? It’s a statewide collaboration between sustainably-minded businesses, like Trail Butter, and nonprofits, like Forest Park Conservancy, teaming up to amplify the impact of Earth Day.

In 2021, 171 Oregon businesses participated! Altogether, these businesses donated over $205,000 to Oregon nonprofits, like Forest Park Conservancy, who work every day to create a healthier planet. In 2022, we know we can do even better!

How Forest Park Conservancy’s Restoration Program Impacts Regional Watershed Health

It’s hard to imagine a Pacific Northwest without forests, rivers, and streams.

Volunteers on Earth Day and throughout the month of April will be helping to restore Forest Park. This work is critical to supporting our region’s overall health, including the health of our watersheds. This Earth Day we are highlighting the impact this work has on the health of the Portland Metro region’s iconic waterways.

Forest Park stretches for 7 miles along the North Tualatin Mountains and has over 30 miles of stream that flow directly into the lower Willamette River. This section of the river is important because it is part of the 10 mile lower Willamette Portland Harbor Superfund Site.

Forest Park plays a critical role in helping improve water quality in this section of river by providing cool, clean water for native salmon and other aquatics species along 7 miles of this 10-mile Superfund Site. Upland habitat restoration in Forest Park is an essential component in making sure water being delivered continues to be cool, clean and help improve water quality.

Healthy Forest ecosystems with thriving native habitat reduces sediment being delivered to streams and provides the critical shade needed to keep water in our streams cool. The work we do remove invasive plant species and plant native trees and shrubs plays a vital role in increasing the health of the Forest Park ecosystem and in return ensuring the long term delivery of cool, clean water to this highly degraded and polluted section of the lower Willamette River.
